Marine electronics are complicated, expensive, and extremely difficult to understand. Right? Meh….not really. Most people have that impression because they get on the water with the sun in their face and the wind in their hair and they are too jazzed up to pay close attention to anything, much less something that is technical and with which they are unfamiliar. Another problem is the severe lack of quality information out there on the matter---we plan to address that issue.

If you ask professional anglers what advice they have to the weekend warrior, which shows up in all the fishing magazines sooner or later, very often most of them will say “Pay more attention to your electronics.” This really isn’t much advice because it is like saying “Pay more attention in school”. Ok, which part? The math? The history? Biology? What exactly am I supposed to pay attention to?

The point I believe they are trying to make is that most people don’t make use of their gear, and there is great benefit to be had by using it as a regular part of your fishing day. Your electronics are packed with capabilities and options designed to let you do what you want to do, and yes, it is a little complicated, and yes, it takes a little effort to learn to use it. But you don’t need a college degree, and the fact that you’re reading this at all means you’ve overcome the hardest part: being willing to spend a little time studying it!

A little reading on the matter or some direct instruction from an experienced person can go a very long way. Read the sonar articles here on Big Georgia Spots, and check back with us often as we are continually adding new content to address your sonar questions. And by the way, when we say “sonar” we generically mean they technology behind traditional “2D” sonar as well as the newer “3D” sonar imaging technology offered by Humminbird and Lowrance.
