When Joe Thomas asked Louie Bartenfield (LB) when the best time of year was to get a 5 lb spot, he said “December”. We have been waiting 9 months for Joe to come back, after having shot an excellent episode of Stihl’s Reel in the Outdoors last March. On Joe’s visit this week, he and Louie concentrated on bluff banks using the float-n-fly, jerkbaits, and deep swimming lures to pull up some really good fish. We won’t spoil the show, but we will tell you this: Joe got what he asked for!
Shooting from the Ultimate Match Fishing (UMF) boat, Joe and LB were faced with a freakishly warm December day, with a high of 67 degrees. “It was downright hot in that sun” says LB ,”That float-n-fly bite was late getting started and this weather didn’t help.” Despite the tough conditions, Carter’s Lake didn’t disappoint.
“This can be a tough lake to fish on any day, and when conditions are tough like this, you really gotta have them dialed in. I’m glad we got a few on camera” says LB.
Joe Thomas is the star host of two of the most popular fishing shows on television: Ultimate Match Fishing and Stihl’s Reel in the Outdoors and has been an FLW and BASS professional tournament angler for over 30 years. But on this trip, he boated his all-time best spotted bass using a very unusual fishing technique. “I don’t think we’ve ever done a really successful float-n-fly show” says Joe, who was once again very pleased with the numbers and size that Carter’s Lake can produce, even under tough conditions.
The show’s producer, Jim Kramer was pleased with the results as well. He commented “We got some good footage. This is going to be a good show.”
Whether or not you fish for spots, any fisherman should find this episode interesting. The float-n-fly is an unusual bass fishing technique, and those unfamiliar with it will certainly find it informative and entertaining.
The episode is scheduled to air in June 2012 on the Outdoor Channel.
